Passion for Nature

By Jojie Alcantara

Girlie Torremonia Sevilla is a business woman and works as a liaison officer in her parents’ business as well. For this family woman, photography is an outlet for her love for nature.

She started with portraiture but felt bored with the genre and eventually shifted to landscape photography.

“Traveling to places I enjoy, discovering and shooting waterfalls make me relaxed and happy,” she enthuses, preferring to capture nature in color and scenes she explores during her trips with newfound friends in the same field.  She also prefers night shoots in long exposures.

“A fellow photographer and president of our club, Engr. Ledon Jasper Samoranos, introduced me to Dr. Glenn Pono, a kind and courageous friend who opened my eyes and heart to travel and landscape photography. He inspires me a lot in this field,” she relates, speaking of inspiring colleagues who invited her to join their club, Landscape Photographers of Davao (LAPD).

Being a female member in a club run by male landscape lensmen enabled her to visit places and showcase her accomplishments through their photo exhibits. She became confident enough to join contests and earned places in the top five slots.

In a very active group that regularly engages in photo safaris around the country, she is in her element when asked her what she brings with her during these challenging trips. She immediately ticks them off one by one in a breath—a Canon 5D Mark III, lenses EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, filters, Nisi 100mm filter holder kit V5, intervalometer, extra SD cards, extra batteries, filter cleaner, cloth cleaner, and a Gitzo Series 3 systematic carbon fiber tripod.

In her memorable travel adventures, she relates she has built an amazing friendship and camaraderie with her colleagues. She traversed with them where there were no trails, climbed big rocks and crossed rivers, and walked without any trekking equipment, armed with only courage and determination to take good photos.

“For me, photography is ultimately about love, communication, courage, friendship, and happiness,” she happily says.

Today, Girlie continues to search for places of wonder in her next travel adventures. Her ultimate goal as a visual artist is to be able to showcase her passion through the beauty of God’s creations and make her family proud of her.
