Tribes of the famous Ati-atihan Festival of Kalibo, capital of Aklan province, will for the first time join the Manggahan Festival in the island province of Guimaras this May.
Albert Meñez, chairman of the Kalibo Sto. Niño Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. (Kasafi), said three groups will represent Aklan in the Western Visayas Invitational Cultural Presentation as part of the Manggahan Festival on May 21.
The three groups are the Black Beauty Boys and Royal Scorpio, both from Kalibo, and the Vikings from Makato.
Meñez said the cultural activity will enable Aklanon groups to showcase what the Ati-atihan has to offer.
The Ati-atihan, celebrated during the third week of January, is a yearly event held in various municipalities of Aklan. The biggest event is held in Kalibo, but Makato, Ibajay, Batan and Boracay in Malay have their own versions of the festival as well.
Meanwhile, the annual Manggahan Festival in Guimaras draws thousands of tourists.
The festival highlights the vibrant mango industry of the province known as the Mango Capital of the Philippines.
