Filipina filmmaker to represent PH in Iraq film fest

A Filipina filmmaker is representing the Philippines in the ongoing Slemani International Film Festival in Iraq.

Papa’s Shadows, the work of Inshallah Montero, a De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) film alumna, chronicles young Mia’s effort to overcome grief and understand the meaning of life and death, following the death of her father, and her mother’s subsequent spiral into sadness.

Montero’s 19-minute film had previously won the Jury Prize in the short film category of last year’s Quezon Cinema Film Festival. The movie stars Pintig Santos and Roence Santos.

It is dedicated to her late inspirations, her mentor, visual artist and shadow puppeteer Don Salubayba, and her favorite cinematographer, Egay Navarro.

“Don’s influence in shadow play, how he introduced the craft to me at a young age, and a conversation with Egay’s little son on his concept of death inspired me to write this story,” she said.

Both of her role models left their children too early.

Montero was a Creative Writing scholar and an Artistic Excellence Awardee at the Philippine High School for the Arts in Makiling, Laguna. She was an honors graduate of DLS-CSB’s Digital Filmmaking Program.

Established last year, the Slemani International Film Festival has separate categories for entries from the Kurdish region, and the international community.

Divisions include feature, short, documentary, and animation. The winners will be announced on Saturday, Oct. 7.
