With the current increase in petrol prices, it’s not hard to rack up a pretty impressive electric bill. Utility bills here in Metro Manila can range anywhere from six to ten thousand a month, and that takes out a reasonable chunk of the average salary; what more if the prices hike?
Here are a few things you can do to save on utilities:
Turn off and unplug all appliances when not in use.
This may sound very basic, but this is probably the one thing that most people forget. Remember, it’s not enough to switch off the TV set or the electric stove when it’s not in use – if it’s plugged, it still uses electricity.
Wash clothes in cold water.
If you launder your clothes using a washing machine on the hot or warm cycle, then you should know that 90% of the energy your washer uses goes into heating the water. Using cold water cuts energy use down significantly and cuts your bills down as well.
Switch to energy-efficient bulbs.
Instead of using incandescent bulb that eats up a lot of electricity, use compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) or LED bulbs. Aside from being energy-efficient, they’re a lot cheaper as well!
Install a Low-Flow Shower Head.
Did you know that most shower heads generate 4-5 gallons per minute? That’s a lot of water simply going down the drain. Low-flow shower heads only put out 1.5 gallons, and with the same strong shower flow. Switching to a low-flow shower head will definitely cut your water bills down.
Use inverter air conditioning units and/or refrigerators.
Inverter air conditioning units and refrigerators save a lot of electricity as its mechanisms were made to specifically regulate temperature and motor speed efficiently, therefore not requiring as much energy as regular units do. They’re a huge investment but will definitely allow you to save more money in the long-run.
Check for leaks.
Sometimes our water bills come out so high because of unchecked leaks – that means we’re paying for water we’re not even using! Book an appointment with your trusty plumber or the local utilities maintenance and have the necessary repairs done as quickly as possible.
