The mere mention of an event at Amelia in Alfonso, Cavite carries a grandiose connotation. It traverses our ultimate fantasies in theme—of mood, fashion, food, and the arts. The Ablaza ballroom has been witness to several grand celebrations and guests look forward to witnessing something new each time. A carefully selected theme was chosen for this year, and Honorary Consul to Guatemala Mellie Ablaza’s 77th milestone was decked with the gaiety and vibrance of Latin America—La Reina de la fiesta. Very supportive of her themed parties is loving husband Consul Louie Ablaza. Both are blessed to be able to do it all and in the most splendid way possible. The greatest gift for them is the gift of life and they will keep the tradition going for years to come.

Mellie, the queen of grand celebrations, has made a science of mixing art and pleasure. At 77, glam Mellie shines bright at the core of Manila society. She is known to make a statement with the fabulous way she dresses. For Mass held at their private chapel, Mellie wore an antique gold tunic with Mexican painter Frida Kahlo’s portrait, topped with a blush floral crown. She quickly changed for lunch where she wore a red and black Steve de Leon creation with a cabbage rose headdress, accented with emeralds. The Ablaza family’s signature of dressing for their theme inspires everyone invited to join in the spirit of fun year after year.

The festivities began with the Tagaytay Aces Drum & Bugle Band with dancing majorettes.  Hombres in Mexican ponchos and sombreros ushered the guests to the adjacent tent brimming with multicolored straw mats as wall decors and central display of Latin American folkloric costumes for cocktails of Moet and tasty slices of roasted calf. After cocktails, guests were led to the elegant ballroom, which was marvelously decorated by Jun Jun Ablaza, replete with large fringed parasols and numerous floral orbs hanging from the ceiling. The party decor emphasized the art pieces of Boysie Villavicencio and Joy Rojas to raise funds for the FCCP scholarship programs. Guests feasted on a special Guatemalan menu prepared by Chef Jessie Sincioco. Entertainment was provided by a mariachi band, balladeer Will Angeles, and modern Latino dances by Dance Royalties. The unbridled imagination of Jun Jun Ablaza was showcased, as the models sashayed down the runway in an edgy, upbeat fashion show entitled “Faith and Fashion,” on which the designer collaborated with celebrity stylist Roko Arceo, under the creative direction of Daniel Cabrera.
