Worth Her Weight in Precious Stones

One of the finest jewelers in the Philippines celebrates a legacy of luxury

Published

How do you pay homage to a jewelers’ brilliance? By making fine jewelry that match, as closely as possible, the signature pieces that launched her career some 40 years ago now. That’s how Jul B. Dizon Jewelry celebrated its founder Jul B. Dizon’s luxurious legacy, with a 40th anniversary collection displayed at a museum-like exhibit last July 11 entitled “Homage” at the Rigodon Ballroom of the Peninsula Manila.

Six designers in total came up with pieces that hearken back to the brand’s roots, a jewelry collection following five themes, which they formed from their mother’s original designs. In quite a special way, Jul’s children and children-in-law—Candy, Cedric, Christoffer, Ginny, Janina, and Lucille—continue what their mother started. These six talented designers, who compose the third generation of jewelers, continue their family’s proud legacy with collections ranging from classic to avant-garde.

“My mother’s creations were mostly inspired by nature. Out of all my siblings, I acquired the love for designing using nature as my inspiration as well,” says Candy.

To complete the tribute, Jul B. Dizon Jewelry also came out with a coffee table book called Homage, which looks back to its founder’s life and legacy of timeless pieces, showcases some of the most iconic, internationally-awarded pieces of Jul, and its various reinterpretations by the next generation of jewelry designers of the Dizon family. These are reflected in each of the chapters of the book, so aptly given titles like Diamanté, Jardin, Lucent, Music of the Spheres, Devotion, and Fauna.

“Mom was fascinated with the natural world, exotic landscapes and abstract ideas, and these inspired my own work as a kind of storytelling itself. It’s sometimes hard to grasp such concepts, which is why we turn to symbolism to give them tangibility. I love to create and wear pieces that have rich meaning,” says Ginny.

Since opening their first store in 1978, Jul B. Dizon Jewelry has become the most awarded jewelry store in the Philippines and has garnered 12 major international awards, including prizes in design competitions by Swarovski, the Korean Jewelry Guild, and the Italian Gold Council. Jul is likewise acclaimed as the first Filipino jeweler to win the prestigious Diamonds International Awards by De Beers.

The 40th anniversary celebration also launched the special “Praesidio” collection of men’s statement cufflinks, spearheaded by Cedric. “Having a Men’s Collection has been a long time coming and finally this year, we were able to finish enough pieces to have a mini collection,” shares Cedric. A showpiece is the Templar cross-inspired cufflinks, which adopts the Collection’s title “Praesidio”—Latin for “to protect”—made with black and white diamonds, yellow diamonds, horn, and 18 Karat yellow gold.
