“Like any art form, photography is more than forms, patterns, and colors for me. It’s how these elements are combined to create a story, an unforgettable moment that cannot be brought back,” shares Cynthia. “There’s a constant need to create pictures to express ourselves visually what we can’t put into words. Not just to describe life as it is, but how we see it. It’s a lifestyle. It’s a way for me to seek beauty and share it like it’s melodic and poetic,” she adds.

She started as the designated family photographer. Inevitably, she was drawn deeper. “I got a Canon G12 in 2011 mainly for family travel pictures. I was a freelance graphics designer then, so I started to pixel peep on my shots, and explored more of my camera.”

With little knowledge about photography, she taught herself the basics, taking advice from Google. “I spent a few months reading, looking at pictures. Everything in the pipho.org forum made me want to travel. I upgraded to Sony RX100 MK1. And like all new photographers, I practiced shooting light trails at Mall of Asia and Manila Bay on my own, then posted them.”

Pursuing light trails turned into trailing other photographers and capturing street scenes. “My first street photowalk was held in Cubao, sponsored by Tamron. I was so shy then because the participants were all guys, except Stephanie de Veyra, who became my close friend. We then joined ‘A Walk to Remember’ by MPI.’”

Veteran lensmen encouraged Cynthia to try new techniques. “I did a long exposure shot at QC Circle in heavy rain. I was taught to not let bad weather bring my hopes down of taking the shot. That was my first time to be mentored on long exposure. After the shot got noticed and inspired viewers, it got me excited to learn more. I became active in photowalks by Pipho and enrolled in a Chasing Light workshop by Jay Jallorina and Edwin Martinez.”

Cynthia gained more experience and dabbled in different genres. “I got hooked on landscapes after seeing the light trails and long exposure nature shots on Pipho. I’ve since invested in camera and camping gear, and set out on nature trips to shoot, mostly going solo. I love this genre so much because it opened a new world for me. There’s always something new to discover, so much beauty in the world to see.”

She’s continuously developing her signature, looking to seasoned photographers for inspiration. “I used to apply bold colors with lots of contrast to my shots, but my style changes depending on my mood.”

Frame of mind is key for Cynthia. “For me, an effective photograph has the right balance of light and shadow. It’s enhanced when the photographer is inspired and driven to make any shot dramatic, whatever the theme.” I believe we release those feelings through our art.”

It’s obvious from Cynthia’s images that she’s enjoying expressing herself through photography. “The basic principle I follow is just to have fun, have a positive vibe before you shoot or post-process, and the rest will follow.”
