Behind every beauty queen is a regular gal. Yes, they’re stunning and statuesque, but appearances don’t come without insecurities. One can imagine how much harder it is for them since their looks are always under public scrutiny. And just like us, they too seek out help.
Pia Wurtzbach undeniably has faultless beauty, but as we know through her story of perseverance, reaching for the crown came with many challenges. We asked her to share some of them and how she overcame them.
She has her fair share of beauty woes (and beauty emergencies!) With the pressures of looking good while working hard, Pia needs to watch out for her skin. “I need an effective and consistent skin-care program to make sure that my skin is glowing, bright, and beautifully bronze. A lot of hard work and long hours come with pre-pageant preparations.”
Like any competition, the beauty pageant is an endurance test and preparing for one takes a lot. “I first met Dr. Cecilia R. Bernad in 2014 when I had just lost the Bb. Pilipinas competition. I was already training for the next one, and she was very supportive. She understood my struggles and sincerely wanted to help me. I was on a tight budget, but seeing my passion and drive to win the crown, she provided my treatments, so that I would be at my best for the competition. Everything paid off in the end.”
Pia gets regular facials and radio frequency (RF) treatments with Dr. CRB, as she’s more popularly known. RF helps with smoothening and lifting skin. Utilizing RF energy has been known to increase collagen production to improve skin tone and structure, and is an effective method for keeping fine lines and wrinkles at bay. Recalls Pia, “I was the first beauty queen she took care of. I love the way she takes care of us beauty queens and treats us like family.” From then until now, Pia shares that visiting Dr. CRB Aesthetic & Laser Clinic is what keeps her skin clear, smooth, poreless, and glowing.
She is no stranger to beauty hauls When Pia flew out to vie for the Miss Universe crown, she made sure to take extra care of herself. “I strictly followed my skin-care regimen, even when I was very busy. At that time, Las Vegas weather was extremely dry and that affects everything—skin, hair, even your mood!”
Having her pre-pageant treatments was just the first step; the more important part was maintaining skin health afterwards. She learned to care for her skin inside out. “Hydrate—it’s very important! Always drink lots of water and don’t forget to moisturize.” Pia always brings her favorite moisturizer and makeup remover wherever she goes.“I also stock up on lotion and sunblock before the flight.”
She de-puffs with cold spoons Queen P deals with puffiness too, so to soothe tired and puffy eyes, she uses a classic beauty hack: “I use a cold eye mask. Sometimes, I chill two teaspoons and cover my eyes with them!” Frequent travel, long hours, stress—a recipe for skin fatigue. Puffiness, dryness, dullness, and breakouts are just a few problems that come with a jet-setter’s lifestyle. But even with her busy schedule, Pia is always at the ready when she encounters these skin issues.
“I’m more aware now about what products work best in certain climates. This helps me adjust my regimen,” she reveals. “In the Philippines, for example, I don’t use lotions that are too thick because the humidity makes them feel quite heavy. Dr. CRB has this amazing Sunblock Gel that I use a lot—it’s perfect for our weather. Colder climates require thicker creams and for this I have a variety of products.”
She works to look good from inside and out Pia takes her stance on being “confidently beautiful with a heart” seriously. “Beauty is all about what’s unseen—how you feel about yourself and how you make other people feel. You can’t fake that [kind of] glow. Give a genuine smile and you get the same from others. That’s the thing about inner beauty, it opens the floodlights and shines on everyone. That’s what makes the people who possess inner beauty so captivating—they make other people feel beautiful, too.”
She adds, “That’s not saying you don’t have to take care of your outer beauty too! When you take care of your body and your skin, you look good, and then you feel good about yourself.” Pia understands that beauty takes time and effort and believes in hard work and consistency. “Just as with anything, to be successful, consistency is key. Regular derma visits can do wonders for your skin, but you also have to religiously follow your recommended skin-care program at home. You may have the right tools, but for the rest of the process, the responsibility is on you.”
