Beauties of Aliwan Fiesta Through the Lens

Published

Aliwan Fiesta’s annual search for festival queen heats up the annual summer festivities.  Riding on the Filipino preoccupation with beauty pageants, we see talent scouts, fashion designers, and corporate sponsors jostling elbows with ordinary men on the street, scrutinizing the bevy of muses for their facial beauty, flawless complexion, physical perfection, and eloquence.

And because the competition has produced a number of national and international titlists such as Vera Eumee Reiter, Karla Henry, Mary Jean Lastimosa, Rizzini Alexis Gomez, Angeli Dione Gomez, Jamie Herrell, Rogelie Catacutan, Cynthia Thomalla, Ma. Ahtisa Manalo, and Sharifa Akeel, the annual pageant has also become a fierce battleground for renowned beauty camps Kagandahang Flores and Aces & Queens, as well as the independents.

The participating festivals make it a point to send the loveliest ladies in the land—from luminous mestizas to olive-skinned beauties, and harness the talent of their designers in crafting eye-popping festival costumes. Cebu has the distinction of having won eight Reyna ng Aliwan titles in 2009-2014 and again in 2016-2017.

In this spread, we see candidates from 2018, led by festival queen Chelsea Fernandez of Tacloban as they caress the camera of master lensman Eddie Boy Escudero.
