As summer vacation rolls around the corner for me, readers, I find myself turning my attention to the arduous task of packing. I’ve been both types of packers: The sheepish overpacker and the remorseful underpacker. I’m sure you can admit being one or the other at a certain point in your life.
As time has gone by, however, and given that I’ve spent the past year traveling around the world, I have learned a thing or two about the art of packing properly. It’s essential to not underpack.
Nothing feels worse than being on the trip of a lifetime and finding that you don’t have enough clothes to dress properly for everything you want to do and all the places you want to go. Likewise, overpacking is just as stressful.
No space is left for any extra shopping you might do, too much time is spent sifting through clothing when you should be out and about, and overweight fees are no one’s best friend.
And so, as I prepare to spend two weeks in New York and Greece, I’ve thought quite a bit about the “staples” of my summer wardrobe this 2019. Listed below are items I believe every girl (or guy) needs one, two, or three variants of in their travel closets, so that they find themselves readily dressed for any occasion. Enjoy!
Scroll through Instagram and you’ll see dozens of midi dresses of every cut and color on your feed. They are all the rage these days, and for good reason. Wear a neutral midi dress for a breakfast run in a tropical island, on a relaxed hike with sneakers later in the day, and then with your dancing sandals for a night hopping through beach bars or city clubs. A dress that hits right at your knee, or just above, should also carry you safely from a casual setting to a more formal or conservative one. My favorite places to buy a good midi dress? Stradivarius, Zara, and Massimo Dutti! You can’t go wrong with a neutral tone or subdued print that can be worn again and again, styled differently each time. Stradivarius printed midi dress
My love for high-waisted pants rivals the love I have for crop tops. Arguably the most flattering silhouette in the world, a good pair of high-waisted, neutral denim pants will be there for you in so many ways: On days when you’ve eaten a little too much, for occasions you need to balance out a sexier top, when you want to cinch your waist, dress up a one-piece or bikini top for a run into town, or add definition to a billowing summer blouse. Zara high-waisted pants
Neutral Crop Top
I like small shirts and I cannot lie, readers. I find them the epitome of chicness, sexiness, and comfort all at once. There is no better season to break out your tiniest tops than the summer months. Topshop olive crop top
Are everything at the moment. Ever flattering and comfortable, wrap skirts add chic feminine vibes to your style in an instant. Experiment with different lengths, prints, and colors to discover what suits your needs best. Mark & Spencers floral wrap skirt
A summer night staple, or for the days you don’t feel inclined to show lots of skin. A light neutral sweater is perfect for layering or covering up without being too stifling. Michael Kors ribbon weaved sweater
Nothing says you’ve got it together like a good co-ord. Whether you choose a matching skirt and top, pants and blouse, or blazer and shorts, readers, rejoice in the multiple looks you’ll get out of your set. Wear your set together, or style the top or bottom with other pieces to create several looks. Max & Co. Jacquered Jersey set
Once you find a jumpsuit you love, readers, you’ll be tempted to wear it everywhere, every day. Such is the case with the long black jumpsuit I wore on my 19th birthday. Invest on a durable, versatile jumpsuit for days when your outfit inspiration fails to strike or for one-stop shop looks while traveling. Zara strappy jumpsuit with tied belt
A wardrobe staple no matter the season. Denim is a neutral! Find a pair of jeans, shorts, and skirts that you can spend all day in. Tommy Hilfiger has my heart when it comes to buying good denim pieces. Tommy Hilfiger demin mini skirt
What would summer OOTDs be without good white blouses? I’d invest in two or three blouses of different styles. My favorite three variations: Off the shoulder, puff sleeve, and button down.
The sleek lines of a bodysuit make them perfect for tucking in any bottom. Perfect for a night out or a day running around without having to worry about retucking your top, a bodysuit should have a home in every girl’s wardrobe.
