Interview by Dom Galeon
By now, Priah Ferguson is not a stranger to fans of Netflix’s ‘80s-themed hit series Stranger Things. If you have seen season 3, then you probably have the utmost respect for Priah’s character Erica, the younger sister to Caleb McLaughlin’s Lucas Sinclair.
We chatted with Priah to know more about her character, Erica, and what it’s like to live in Hawkins, Indiana.
Your character, Erica, becomes a regular for Stranger Things season 3. How did you feel when they told you about this?
I was excited and not expecting it at all. I was only supposed to be part of one or two episodes in Season 2. To go from that and be welcomed as part of the ensemble, it’s still unbelievable.
What’s it like “living” in Hawkins, Indiana? What’s it like being part of this show?
For Erica, Hawkins is a small town that’s very much centered on family and friends. She sees it as very quirky, a little slow, and it annoys her a little. Being part of the show is a little opposite because everyone was very welcoming and supportive.
What were you most excited about for season 3? What about for your character?
Every plot in season 3 is interesting. Every actor is amazing. The set details and wardrobe, especially at the mall… it was so good. My character wasn’t predictable, and that was what excited me most.
How did you prepare for your role this season?
I studied the past seasons of Stranger Things, the different news stories or topics taking place at that time, ‘80s music, fashion… I went through my grandma’s photo albums. I also created a backstory for Erica and her experience in Hawkins.
Do you ever imagine how it will be if we really have an Upside Down?
Oooh, I try not to. That will be scary. Very scary.
Anything you can tell those who haven’t seen season 3? No spoilers but just something they can look forward to?
There’s something to look forward to for everyone—suspense, horror, comedy, love. Just bigger and darker.
Stranger Things 3 is now streaming on Netflix.
HOW TO SOLVE MYSTERIES AND FIGHT BAD GUYS
Lessons we learned from Stranger Things’ Erica Sinclair
Crawling inside a vent is no joke; it can be quite dangerous, even for grown-ups! But even though Erica did not have phobias, she came prepared for the mission—all geared up in a helmet with flashlights, elbow pads, and knee pads. She knew her way around the vents, too, proof that she studied the blueprints well before the mission began.
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions.”
When Steve (Joe Keery), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), and Robin (Maya Hakwe) first proposed the mission to Erica, she wasn’t sold on their “half-baked plan.” She boldly called it for what she thought it was, asking smart questions about armed guards, “booby traps, lasers, spikes on the wall.”
“Share your thoughts, especially if it’ll help save others.”
While Hopper (David Harbour), Bauman (Brett Gelman), and Joyce (Winona Ryder) were poring over the mall’s blueprints, trying to figure out how they could close the gate, Bauman wrongly estimated the distance between the vault room and the gate at “maybe 50 feet or so.” To keep her new comrades from danger (it was a dangerously bad estimate), Erica bravely and proudly stepped in and offered information that only someone who’d been down in the secret lair for 24 hours would know.
Be a team player.
When the Scoops Troop (Steve, Dustin, Robin, and Erica) ran into some trouble that kept them from easily escaping the bad guys, Erica could have gotten out but she refused to leave her newfound friends behind and helped save them instead.
