From almost 300 auditions, ABS-CBN Films managing director Olivia Lamasan has announced the iconic role of Mars Ravelo‘s Darna will go to 20-year-old actress Jane de Leon.
De Leon is a Star Magic talent and had small television credits in Wansapanatym, MMK, and La Luna Sangre. Her most recent appearance on TV was in Halik alongside Jericho Rosales.
The singer-actress was also a member of It’s Showtime‘s Girltrends, and appeared in the 2018 movie Walwal.
Liza Soberano was the initial selection for Darna but had to pull out to undergo surgery for her finger, thus starting a debate among fans who should replace her—and now an answer has been found in de Leon.
She joins a long list of actresses who have once upon a time taken on the role and had given life to the Pinay komiks superhero, from 1951 to 2009, beginning with Rosa del Rosario, followed by Nora Aunor, Eva Montes, Gina Pareño, Vilma Santos, Lorna Tolentino, Rio Locsin, Sharon Cuneta, Nanette Medved, Anjanette Abayari, Regine Velasquez, Angel Locsin, and Marian Rivera.
This latest remake of Darna, to be directed by Heneral Luna and Goyo‘s Jerrold Tarog, is expected to come out in late 2020.
