Here’s what we saw on the red carpet of this year’s SONA

In giving the Filipino classic wear a new spin and showcasing local textiles, the attendees of this year’s State of the Nation Address did not disappoint. Even the rostrum of the House Session Hall was dressed in ethnic weave, as if it was the code for the afternoon agenda.

Sen. Risa Hontiveros in a barong-inspired garment by Joel Acebuche, made from the woven textile of Kalibo with embroidery from Lumban. She completed the look with a pair of shoes proudly made in Marikina.


Rep. Geraldine Roman in Paul Cabral’s Filipiniana and alampay with two-toned pink mermaid skirt.


Davao del Sur Rep. Mercedita Cagas in a gown by Renee Salud made from t’nalak, a native weave in Mindanao.

House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano paired his barong with sneakers.


Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate in a handpainted barong by Sol Taule that referenced the conflict on the West Philippine Sea.


Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo in tailored suit embroidered with the image of a hooded man and florals. He completed the look with what appeared to be a Gucci bag.



Cong. Paolo Duterte attends his father’s fourth SONA in the same barong he wore during this morning’s House Speaker elections.
