With the advent of minimalism and Marie Kondo, everyone has become more consciously sustainable with their life choices, including fashion. The mantra “less is more” now greatly resonates more into our daily lives, closer to even how American-German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe first coined the architectural aphorism to modernist ethic.
In Kondo’s book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, Kondo posits the question “Does it spark joy?” A long, hard look into one’s wardrobe and one might find it difficult to dissect pieces which no longer elicit any semblance of a memory. Let’s admit it: We all have an emotional connection with clothes. Whether it’s your first ballet tutu flecked with glitter dust during a production of Nutcracker or even that square-toed leather Chelsea boot you wore to your first job interview, the truth is we associate certain parts and, to an extent, life milestones to articles of clothing.
And this is exactly what Ariel InstaShine, together with its new ambassador Lea Salonga, wants you to experience. Headlining the world’s first ever laundry musical, the Filipino icon relives her most iconic roles to date with the one-of-a-kind musical When I Shine With You.
From Annie to Miss Saigon, Salonga has a rich four-decade history of memories tucked into her treasured clothes. When I Shine With You journeys down memory lane by retelling the stories that made the first ever Tony Award winner of Asian descent truly world class.
“Annie feels like forever ago,” Salonga muses to the crowd during the musical debut in Makati City. “Annie was my first big break. I was nine then and felt a big mix of happy, scared, and really just enjoying myself. That’s why I kept my dress after all these years: to remind myself of that girl who believed she could shine.”
In 1989, Salonga played the role of a lifetime with Kim in the debut production of Miss Saigon in London. She adds, “I had no idea how demanding it was going to be to play the role of Kim. As a teenager, I found it worth it because it pushed me to be more creative and thoughtful with my craft. That’s why I’ll always find the shirt I wore to the audition memorable. It may seem like a simple white one but it means a lot to me—it was the one that helped me shine and live my dreams.”
But, to date, Salonga takes pride the most in being a mom to her daughter Nicole, “And being a mom, I enjoy being a mom. I love watching my daughter grow and teaching her and learning from her. All of these have been so fulfilling. It’s been a long journey, and all those clothes. And that segues to my new role, as ambassador for Ariel InstaShine.”
With its promise of superior cleaning and boost of extra shine, Ariel delivers the most advanced technology to its premium detergent. “Ariel InstaShine now has power boosters,” explains Louie Morante of P&G Asia regional brand communications. “It has those blue power booster beads, which give you that extra cleaning benefit. Also, it gives you the benefit of superior stain removal, so it really makes your clothes look like new.”
When asked what about Salonga that Ariel admires so much. Morante continues, “Ariel stands for progression, innovation, and bringing in the light to our consumers across the Philippines and around the world. I think Lea brings that image of progression. She’s a very progressive Filipina and a world class talent. She’s globally acclaimed for her technical abilities.”
In true fashion, Salonga and Ariel InstaShine invite you to spark joy and memories together.
