Photographer of the Week: Arturo Rivo Jr.

Published

By Maan D’Asis Pamaran

Arturo Rivo Jr. is a comic book fanboy. In particular, he is a collector of Marvel X-Men character Cyclops. Perhaps it is the hero’s alter-ego Scott Summer’s use of his Ruby Quartz visor to enhance his power that appeals to Art—as he, in his own way, skilfully unleashes his creativity through the lens of his camera. Following Cyclops’ storyline through the frames of a comic book, he creates a storyline of his own, with his portraits of interesting personalities he encounters on his journeys.

“My love for photography started in 2006 when digital photography and point-and-shoot camera started booming in the Philippines,” he recalls. “I got a first try on an Olympus FE-100, and since then, I enjoyed photography as a hobby. I started taking photos of about anything from insects to landscapes to people. In 2010, I bought myself my very first DSLR from Japan, a Nikon D3000, and continued my passion and decided to take photography seriously and teach myself the basics.”

He started working in Dubai in 2013, and that was when he found a group that shared his interest in photography. “In Abu Dhabi, I joined the Shootercada Photographers’ Circle. Because of this group, my knowledge in photography grew as I learned from other members in our photo shoots, cover events, photowalks, and fun photography activities.” It was there, he says, that he started to take his hobby seriously.

Art has since done many photo shoots focused on street photography and creative portraiture. “I love capturing different emotions, especially genuine emotions of people in their everyday lives. I like connecting with people and sharing my talents to them. It makes me happy seeing them happy when they see their portraits. Also, I love story telling through my portraits. Portraiture can show emotions, inspire people, tell stories, and show different kinds of art,” he enthuses.

Some of his works have won competitions and have been printed in international publications. “One of my major achievements is winning first place in IPA-Philippines in 2018 in one of its categories. I also won in a Nikon Photography contest in 2017 and later in 2018 I placed again as a runner-up. I won fifth place in Al Wathba Photo Competition in the UAE in 2016 which was publicized in several newspapers in the country.”

Several other international photo competitions such as Umbra International Photography awards 2019, PABA International Photo Competition, and the 2017 Golden Orchid International Photography Awards have also recognized his images. He has contributed work for UAE-based CamerPixo Hot Shots magazine, Illustrado, and The Filipino Times.

For him, photography is about expression through art. “I am still enjoying and learning my craft. My ultimate goal as a photography is to give international recognition to our country and to be a contributor in the community as we lift the level of our talents to world class. The best thing about being a photographer is that there are no rules. You can enjoy and express whatever you want and it makes me appreciate life even more because I see beauty in everything.”
