Three wellbeing tips from Dr. Kaycee Reyes, who recently opened Luminisce Alabang

We spoke with Manila Bulletin Lifestyle columnist Dr. Kaycee Reyes and she gave us three tips on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

TIP NO. 1: Protect your gut

Take probiotics. This is very important because your gut is your second brain. Some of the hormones of the body is formed in the gut, and if you don’t have good bacteria, there will be inflammation in the body. So it’s nice to take probiotics because it will improve the good bacteria, the good lining of the gut. And it will improve you—it will increase your metabolism, it will lessen
the chances of autoimmune flares or even acne breakouts.

TIP NO. 2: Take melatonin at night

Melatonin is antioxidant, it’s not only a sleeping aid. It’s an antioxidant that is formed in the pineal gland. But as we age, the body produces less of it. Melatonin is the one responsible for the circadian rhythm of the body. That’s why most people who do shift work, like BPO employees who work at night or nurses who do nightshifts in hospitals, are more prone to develop cancer because their circadian
rhythms are not well balanced. You need to balance that by taking melatonin. And what’s good about melatonin, it’s preventive. Based on studies, it can prevent cardiac diseases, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and dementia.

In a fastpaced world, where almost everyone is so busy going about their daily tasks, work or otherwise, many people have less and less time for the things that truly matter. Among these is health and wellness. A person’s overall wellbeing should be given the utmost attention, otherwise one won’t be healthy enough to do the other tasks expected of them at work and at home.

TIP NO. 3: Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness means paying attention to your thoughts in everything you do because. Truly be mindful. Protect your heartand your mind. Always think happy thoughts and then practice meditation, at least five to 10 minutes—prayer is a form of meditation. Wellbeing is not just about renewing your skin or the body, it’s also renewing your soul. It’s holistic: renew everything, inside and outside.
