Skin care is a must to achieve that youthful suppleness and glow. No matter how expensive your skin care is, however, if you fail to nourish your skin from within, there will still be imperfections you just can’t cover.

As you apply your nightly skin care regimen, make sure you also feed your skin right during the day. Here are some of the stuff you need say yes to and those you just have to say no to.

Say yes to food that stimulates your body to produce collagen. This will keep your skin supple and free from wrinkles. Collagen, a fibrous protein, is important in keeping the skin elasticity and integrity. Food that boosts collagen production includes seaweed, omega three-rich food like tuna, salmon, sardines, chia seeds, and flax seeds, vitamin C-rich food like oranges, dark leafy vegetables, guava, tomatoes, hot chili peppers, and sulfurcontaining vegetables like garlic and vegetables belonging to the cruciferous family like broccoli and cabbage.

Say no to substances that make your skin age faster due to free radical formation. Quit smoking and only drink alcoholic beverages occasionally and in moderation. You don’t have to start drinking alcohol if you haven’t tried it yet.

Say yes to water-rich food. Of course you will never go wrong with pure water to keep your skin hydrated but you can also eat your water. Choose fruits and vegetables like cucumber, lettuce, celery, tomatoes, bell peppers, cabbage, coconut water, watermelon, cantaloupe, and citrus fruits like oranges and strawberries. You can also have some soup but best to choose those that are not cream based. Clear soup is the best option.

Say no to refined sugars and dairy products. These increase the production of a growth hormone in the body called IGF-1. It is inflammatory in nature and can cause the development of acne and pimples. Choose nut milk as a substitute for cow’s milk. If you are worried about calcium, up your intake of green leafy vegetables like malunggay and spinach. They contain more calcium than milk.

Say yes to being physically active. Exercise oxygenates your skin. Perspiration opens up pores to excrete toxins that are embedded deep within your skin. These toxins clog up your pores and cause acne and all kinds of skin problems. Movement also promotes blood circulation, which is vital in distributing skin-friendly nutrients to areas of the body that need nourishment for repair.

Say no to sleepless nights. Lack of inadequate sleep makes your hormones go haywire. Your skin will start to break out. Normally, you will find that one of the best solutions to great skin is just to sleep.

Say yes to rest and relaxation. Taking time off work and destressing will decrease the inflammation in the body, which causes skin irritation. Have you ever wondered why you have breakouts and experience skin redness and irritation whenever you are stressed out? It is because of inflammation. Unhealthy looking skin is a sign that there is something wrong with you, perhaps mentally, emotionally, and physically. Analyze what or who triggers your symptoms. Avoid if you must or at least help yourself by doing something to alleviate the stress.
