NARS holiday 2019 is about getting glossed, gilded, and glittered. What’s a holiday makeup collection without some shine, right? But if there’s anything cult makeup brand NARS knows how to do best, it’s how to make a statement.
As a photographer and makeup artist, Francois Nars is a creative influenced by fashion and modern art. The images for his brands campaigns or editorial work can easily be identified from a lineup: a gritty graphic or smoky eye in hypnotic blue, purple or green eyeshadow, or richly colored lips in a dark hue, perhaps an unexpected color (even canary yellow). Makeup, yes, but in the make-it-fashion way.
NARS’s brand of beauty calls for thinking out of the box, being bold, being more! Femme fatale is the muse you’ll always encounter, no matter what.
For this year’s limited edition collection, the brand looks to the heyday of iconic Studio 54: the glitz, the glamour, the spectacular shine!
Studio 54 is synonymous with full-on glam, high-profile influencers- —the height of celebrity in the ’70s. The collection embodies that era of excess and expression in its color palette and lavish packaging.“Excess yourself” is rightfully the banner it upholds.
“It’s a great time to bring out glitter as ‘appropriate.’ Studio 54 was legendary,” says NARS Philippines brand manager, Sam Gallardo. “It was a place where you let yourself go and indulge. With NARS’s high fashion take on innovative formulas and packaging, this collection is an exciting combination of excess and necessity.”
The beauty arsenal gives one the license to bask in the sexiest, most scintillating looks. As expected, NARS’s lipstick lineup is strong with lusty Audacious Lipsticks bestsellers like Carmen and Mona, Powermatte Lip Pigments with enduring color, and Disco Dust Lipsticks sparkling in stardust.
These shimmering sticks are reminiscent of the time Studio 54’s dance floor was covered in four tons of glitter for a New Year’s Eve celebration. My faves: Andy (pomegranate with pink flecks) and Pat (shimmering purple).
The strength of the collection is also in the Power Palettes for eyes and skin. For a mesmerizing gaze, there’s the intense Inferno (stunning) and Hyped (silky) Eyeshadow Palettes; and for glimmering skin, Free Lover Cheek Palette in uninhibited, second-skin shades.
The pièce de résistance: Velvet Rope Velvet Matte Lip Pencil Box with built-in sharpener. This glistening, purple cigarette box-like case, houses four lip pencils in daring shades of red (Bad Girl, Sex Machine, Dragon Girl, Dolce Vita). These could easily be in heavy rotation for your sultry looks.
Along with the collection launch is the announcement of newly minted “narsissists” for NARS Philippines: Raymond Gutierrez, who recently threw a much talked-about Halloween party, “Opulence,” and Liz Uy, a powerful fixture in Manila’s fashion scene.
Both have strong ties with fashion and editorial work and, as creatives and entrepreneurs, have taken bold moves themselves.
“NARS resonates with Mond and Liz as they are both obsessed with their craft,” says Sam. “Narsissists are beauty-obsessed and are relentless in the search for the best beauty products.”
Having a male represent the brand is also suitable and timely. “Inclusivity should encompass preferences, whether for gender, fashion, or beauty,” she says. “There shouldn’t be any societal conventions that hold back expression.”
To celebrate both the new holiday collection and partnerships, NARS held a press preview at Shangri-la The Fort. Guests were treated to a personalized makeup session, and then whisked away in a Hummer limousine for the after-party at Bank Bar.
