“Women think of all colors except the absence of color,” says the designer behind the famous tweed jacket Gabrielle Coco Chanel. The fact is that women see more shades of the colors—the distinctions between red and orange, for example—than men.
Warm and vibrant, the second and latest collaboration between Japanese clothing brand Uniqlo and Finnish design house Marimekko is not short on bold prints and vivid colors.Sure enough, these can add a dose of fun to your chilly weather wardrobe.
Since 1951, the Helsinki-based brand Marimekko has been producing eye-catching prints and textiles in psychedelic colors with its pioneer designers: Vuokko Nurmesniemi(bold stripes) and Maija Isola (Unikko poppy). From then on, Marimekko prints have been everywhere, from being curated by then store display manager Giorgio Armani in his Rinascente store, worn by Jacqueline Kennedy in the ’60s, to being worn by fictional sex-and-relationship columnist Carrie Bradshaw in the hit TV series Sex and the City.
For their current collaboration, Marimekko injects its spirit of joy into Uniqlo’s limited edition collection for women and babies this season. Cashmere hoodies, shirts, tunics, and winterwear such as cocoon coats, turtle necks, and padded parkas are splashed with Marimekko’s classic prints such as the Siirtolapuutarha (city garden), Kivet (stones), Räsymatto (rag rug), and Seireeni (siren).
The collection brings together the complementary approaches of the two companies, infusing iconic elements from both brands bringing to life Finnish winter traditions of families enjoying the outdoors in the snowy forests under the magical northern lights, and gathering around the fireplace to warm up in the cozy atmosphere of their winter cabins.
We believe that together with Uniqlo we have been able to create something truly special for our customers, and can’t wait to see this new line bring joy to people’s daily lives around the world.
“We are very excited to introduce our second limited edition collection designed in collaboration with Marimekko, following the success of our 2018 spring/summercollection,” says Yuki Katsuta, head of Research and Development of Uniqlo. “I amalso pleased to see Marimekko prints and colors on such Uniqlo Lifewear as cashmere, ultra-light down, and Heattechfor the very first time. What a beautiful way to stay warm in the coming winter months, while celebrating a touch of Finnish tradition.”
“Following the positive reception of our first limited edition collaboration collection with Uniqlo in spring 2018, we are thrilled to collaborate with Uniqlo again for fall/winter 2019,”says Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko, president and CEO of Marimekko. “The new limited edition collection features Marimekko’s bold prints and colors in winterly wardrobe essentials made for all. We believe that together with Uniqlo we have been able to create something truly special for our customers, and can’t wait to see this new line bring joy to people’s daily lives around the world.”
