This year’s Southeast Asian (SEA) Games is probably the most memorable one for Indonesian athlete Edgar Xavier Marvelo.
The young man bagged two gold medals for men’s Gunshu and Daoshu events. While working hard and giving his best at the competition, without him knowing that on that very same moment, his father had passed away. To keep him away from distractions, his team kept this news from him until he received his gold medals.
Based on social media posts, Edgar has a close relationship with his parents, as he says “no matter what happens, my family comes first.” The news of the sudden death of his father brought the athlete to tears during the awarding ceremony.
“People in his team were in tears after his victory and those who were not just tears of joy. Edgar’s father died while he was competing in the event and he was only informed about it after winning the gold, bringing him to tears,” 2019 SEA Games says in a Facebook post.
In the end, Edgar dedicates his medals to his father and to his country.
Great job, Edgar! Our hearts and prayers are with you, after all, #WeWinasOne.
