By Maan D’Asis Pamaran

Businessman Roland P. Laus has worked long and hard to achieve success. Born to a big family with entrepreneurial parents, he strove to build his brand despite the challenges of marrying young. “I did not finish college, having married at 18. Since that young age, I tried to make a living to prove to my parents that I can take care of my own family.”

He was fortunate to have had models of discipline and business acumen in his late parents. “They started with a small store in the public market selling fabrics until they were able to grow their business into financing land development. They also used to be the biggest Levi’s jeans distributor in Northern Luzon. I was in my 30s and working at the Laus group of companies until the time came when I realized that I needed to establish my own business.”

In 1994, he put up his logistics company 557 Corporation. “At that time I started with six employees, and the hard work paid off. As of 2019, I have 850 employees. I was able to expand in protein recovery plant and poultry slaughtering and further processing plant. At present, my poultry plant can slaughter up to 90,000 birds per day with our machinery, which I can say is the most technologically advanced in the Philippines.”

With his dedication to work, it was only quite recently that he fell into photography. “Stress is what brought me to photography,” he laughs. “When I bought my first camera five years ago, it ended up in the closet for six months because I don’t have any idea on how to use it until I met a good friend and asked him to give me a private lesson.”

He tested his skills on street photography, but soon shifted to shooting landscapes. “It’s so exciting going to places and meeting people with the same hobby. The most significant experience with this hobby is to see places that are not on the minds of ordinary tourists.”

Aside from being a stressbuster, photography gives Roland a different perspective of life. “Seeing the Northern Lights was a humbling experience. Staring at millions of stars in the middle of nowhere, was a blast. When I am in the field holding my camera, there is this feeling of freedom and     emptiness. It’s a weird feeling. Your surroundings become infinite and you feel that you are so small and the world is huge. It has taught me to respect and enjoy the only world we live in.”

He calls himself a nature lover, letting nature dictates the mood and the colors of his pictures. “Landscape photography is being there at the right time and being patient. You have to be one with nature to balance your feelings and at the same time.” At 62 and ready to take more time to indulge in his hobby, he is now looking to delve into wildlife photography. “My goal is to capture animals in the wilderness and in their natural habitat, and my grail is to capture eagles catching food with their claws.”

Happily married for 44 years to Lourdes M. Laus, with two children Anna Pamela and Timothy James, plus eight grandchildren, his long-term goal is to hold an exhibit for the appreciation of his family, friends, and close associates. “Now that I am turning 63, I work less to enjoy life and my passion in photography. Joining photography tours is what I do and I recommend this to others so they, too, can see and explore places they never imagined visiting!”
