A Sense of Calmness

Photographer of the Week: Juan Paolo Sison

Updated

By Maan D’Asis Pamaran

As a young lensman, Juan Paolo S. Sison is guided by his motto from the words of the famous photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson: “Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst.”

It is a good thing, then, that Paolo started taking photos with his family’s digicam in his childhood, so now, at the age of 23, he has become a wedding photographer who finds time to escape to nature for landscape shots.

“I used to play with our digicam, taking funny pictures of the people around me. Years later, I received my very own camera as a gift and that’s where it all started. I went outside day or night just to take pictures.”

Soon enough, he was invited to some pictorials for fun and he gladly used these opportunities to test his dexterity and enhance it as much as he could. “Everything was for fun, until such time that I chose my hobby as a profession.”

A Bachelor of Science in Advertising graduate at the Central Philippine University, he says that he utilizes photography to share his experiences, ideals and to awaken people’s imagination. “I let the viewer interpret my work using their wild imagination, allowing them to understand it through their own perspective.”

For now, Paolo considers himself as a beginner, fulfilling his dreams and building his name as a professional photographer with some clients who have entrusted him to capture their milestone moments. He also joins photo competitions and his latest achievement was winning first place sponsored by Megaworld for their Iloilo property Sta. Barbara Heights. He is likewise a member of Discover Panay Island by Hawili Hurom.

He describes a certain calmness in his photograph. “That is to entice not just myself but also the viewer and to make sure I will be able to convey each valuable moment and the story that comes with it,” he explains. “I prefer colored images because it can convey raw emotions and direct approach to the viewers. I see photographs as effective if they can convey a story that can be told using a thousand words. Nature and people are my favorite subjects. Every time I am able to capture wonderful moments of people and the beauty of nature, I am motivated and more inspired to learn and continue my passion which is also my profession.”

His ultimate goal is to be a photographer for National Geographic. At the moment, he finds fulfilment as a wedding photographer for RR Production. “Matching my passion with my profession is an accomplishment for me. It started out as a hobby but I really find it rewarding. When I am at a photo shoot, it feels like I am not working at all.” he smiles. “There are a lot of things that I still need to learn with my work, but I am very much passionate about it.  I will continue to learn until such time that I will be able to reach my ultimate goal.”

As a photographer, he believes in always going back to basics. “Keeping the principles of photography in mind will ensure that I am doing it right, despite the different trends that are emerging in the field.”
