Five Commandments Of Good Skin Care

Thou shall keep these beauty resolutions for 2020 and beyond

1. Thou shall not take exfoliation for granted

We put so much importance on moisturizing when in fact, we should address the ground zero of any skincare regimen—exfoliating. Removing the superficial layer is the first step in ensuring skin is ready for the products that will follow. No amount of expensive moisturizer can improve your skin if it cannot penetrate through the dead skin cells clogging it.

It is advisable to get a once-a-month facial, preferably with microdermabrasion, to “buff and polish” skin, improve circulation, and encourage skin renewal. This helps improve skin texture and appearance by reducing marks, fine lines, and wrinkles. Skin tone becomes more even, brighter, with pores purified. Consider this a deep clean for accumulated dirt and other pore-clogging impurities.

At home, exfoliate two to three times a week through the use of a reliable sonic brush, and a good exfoliating scrub or mask. Mario Badescu AHA and Ceramide Moisturizer (p1,350) doubles as an effective exfoliant and moisturizer in one. Gentle alpha hydroxy acid revives dull and congested skin, while ceramide keeps moisture in. Available at Rustan’s The Beauty Source.

2. Thou shall honor the benefits of tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is a multiple-use, miracle worker that has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antifungal properties. It can soothe and heal irritated skin, combat oil and acne, and speed up healing for cuts and wounds—the list goes on. Just remember to dilute it first. Don’t apply directly onto your skin. Try The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil Peel-Off Mask at home. Just add cold water, mix, and leave on for five to 10 minutes. You can drop some oil on hot water too for aromatherapy and have a relaxing, DIY home spa. Available at SM Mall of Asia and SM Beauty Stores.

3. Thou shall not let sweat stay on skin

Wash skin thoroughly immediately after a workout! Breakouts happen just like that when you let sweat stay and dry out in your clothes. Post-workout breakouts happen because of the friction, bacteria, cross-contamination from equipment, and product residue that clogs and wreaks havoc on skin.

The number one facial cleanser in Japan, Senka Perfect Whip (P129/50g and P279/120g), is a good way to remove deep-seated dirt and sebum. This foaming face wash has naturally derived silk essence and hyaluronic acid for a quick but thorough cleaning. Just lather two centimeters of product with one teaspoon of water, rub hands until you form a big “whip” then dip your face into a soft, foamy cloud. Available at Watsons, SM Beauty Stores, and Lazada.

Keep wipes or pre-soaked pads handy (makeup remover or toner works) so you can easily remove sweat and grime sans a faucet and sink. Or you can make your life easier and bring Simple Skincare Micellar Wipes (p250). Gentle, free of perfume, colorant, and chemical, the product, aside from removing impurities, also provides instant hydration. Tip: Don’t forget to wear a headband to prevent sweat and product residue from hair products to reach past the hairline.

Removing the superficial layer is the first step in ensuring skin is ready for the products that will follow. No amount of expensive moisturizer can improve your skin if it cannot penetrate through the dead skin cells clogging it.

4. Thou shall carry a beauty balm at all times

Balms are healing and hydrating. They can save you when traveling, or when your skin reacts to changing weather conditions. It’s your first aid when things get dry, chapped, or itchy. Your beauty balm also acts as a protective skin barrier.

Dr. Paw Paw Shea Multi-purpose Balm can be used as a skin, nail, hair and body care, and made for makeup too (tinted versions available). Lips are prone to dryness and sunburn and could easily be forgotten in the skincare hierarchy. Regularly apply Hurraw! Lip Balm (P395), an EcoCert-certified, organic, and vegan prod. Try Baobab Banana Lip Balm packed with vitamin C and golden yellow, coldpressed oil from Africa’s Tree of Life to replenish lost moisture. Available at Beauty Bar.

5. Thou shall apply a holy grail eye treatment

La Prairie Skin Caviar Eye Lift raises one’s entire gaze with the first eye-opening serum for the whole eye area—including brows! A gentle lifting, firming treatment with the potent combination of enriched Caviar Premier and La Prairie’s life and energy-giving, exclusive Cellular Complex. La Prairie scientists found that with regular use, over time the eyes are opened, with eye contours and eyebrows redefined. The upper lids appear tightened while crow’s feet also visibly reduced.
