“If you don’t get out there and define yourself, you’ll be quickly and inaccurately defined by others.” – Becoming, Michelle Obama

For many young people who venture into higher education, college can be as exciting as it is terrifying, balancing academics and extra-curriculars, personal discoveries and peer pressure, scholarships and funding.

Is this who I really am, or am I just trying to fit it? Is this the path I really want in life? A semester into the school year, those are the sort of questions college freshmen may be asking themselves, making some friends while losing others, maybe swapping courses, even colleges. In a time of life where there is a lot of uncertainty, the only certain thing is that no student is alone in having these fears and concerns.

Former First Lady of the US, Michelle Obama, announced the launch of her new series, A Year of Firsts, set to stream on Instagram’s IGTV. The series will focus on the lives of four college freshmen from around the United States.

“As a first-generation college student myself, I know how intimidating it can be to take that leap and pursue your educational dreams,” Obama said in a statement, “That’s why I’m so proud of these students. By sharing their stories, they’re helping others see that the ups and downs of the first year of college are something everyone goes through – and they’re creating a supportive community for others facing similar challenges.”

The series is made in partnership with Obama’s Reach Higher, the program Obama started during her time in the White House, which assists students in pursuing higher education, and ATTN a media production company known for discussing important societal topics through digestible content on social media platforms.

A Year of Firsts will feature six episodes and will debut in mid-January. Last year, Obama released her highly anticipated memoir, Becoming, to great fanfare and rave reviews. She and her husband, former President of the US Barack Obama, have also secured a production deal with Netflix post-White House residency.
